Victoria’s Nomination Pathway for Subclass 858 Now Open

The Victorian Government has officially confirmed its participation in the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) program — a federal permanent residency visa pathway aimed at attracting top global talent with internationally recognised achievements.

Through this new nomination stream, Victoria will support high-calibre individuals whose work can drive innovation, productivity and long-term growth within the state — positioning Victoria as a global hub for emerging industries.

What is the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)?

The NIV 858 is a direct-to-PR visa designed for individuals with a distinguished international reputation in their field.

Unlike other skilled visa options, applicants do not need to hold a temporary visa first.

This visa officially replaced the Global Talent Independent (GTI) program at the end of 2024, evolving into a more strategic, nationally coordinated system to attract world-class talent to Australia.

Why Victoria’s Nomination Matters

Victoria’s nomination helps fast-track your Expression of Interest (EOI) under Priority Two in the Department of Home Affairs’ processing queue — potentially reducing wait times and strengthening your case.

By nominating talented individuals, the Victorian Government aims to secure global experts who will contribute to the state’s innovation ecosystem, boost its global competitiveness, and build long-term industry capability.

Note: A nomination does not guarantee an invitation from the federal government — but it significantly enhances your profile during the EOI process.

Basic Eligibility for Victorian Nomination

To be considered for nomination, you must:

  • Demonstrate exceptional talent and a strong record of achievement in your field
  • Engage with a Victorian Government department or agency, explaining how your expertise will benefit Victoria
  • Be referred by a Victorian Government entity or recognised expert
  • Meet the Home Affairs criteria for the Subclass 858 visa
  • Be under 55 years of age, or provide compelling reasons if over 55
  • Show a genuine intention to live and contribute in Victoria

Who Should Apply?

This visa is ideal for individuals working in or leading innovation across:

  • Technology entrepreneurship, AI, and deep tech R&D
