English Language Requirement for the 482 Visa Set to Be Lowered – PTE Changes Expected from 13 September 2025

In a major update to Australia’s skilled migration framework, the Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that the English language threshold for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Subclass 482 visa – Short-Term stream – will be lowered. This change aims to improve access to Australia’s labour market for skilled international workers, especially those in high-demand, lower-barrier occupations.

According to official announcements, the revised PTE Academic requirements are expected to take effect from 13 September 2025, pending formal legislative approval. Applicants who sit their test on or after this date will be assessed under the new standards.

Current vs. New PTE Requirements for 482 (Vocational English)

Note: The new PTE requirements only apply to tests taken on or after 13 September 2025.

If your test date is before 13 September 2025, you will still need to meet the current minimum of 36 in each component.

Existing Test Scores Remain Valid – Language Exemptions Unchanged

• If you already achieved four 36s in your PTE test taken before 13 September 2025, your results remain valid for a 482 (Short-Term) visa application, with a visa validity of up to 3 years.
• The language exemption criteria remain unchanged – for example, applicants with five years of full-time study in English or other approved exemptions can still apply without test scores.

• Reduced language test pressure: The minimum requirements – especially for speaking and writing – are significantly eased, making it easier to pass.
