South Australia opens nomination pathway for Subclass 858 National Innovation Visa

From 7 December 2024, the Australian Government will officially launch the new permanent residency pathway — the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) — replacing the previous Global Talent Independent (GTI) program. While the visa retains the core intent of GTI, it has been restructured into a more strategic, nationally coordinated system aimed at attracting top global talent to support Australia’s advanced industries and innovation-driven economic transformation.

South Australia leads the way with nomination support

As one of the first states to respond, South Australia has now opened its Subclass 858 nomination pathway for the 2024–25 program year. Eligible candidates can submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) through the state’s nomination process. A successful state endorsement can strengthen the federal application, improving both the processing priority and chances of approval.

Focus on high-impact talent and priority sectors

South Australia is particularly seeking applicants with strong potential in key innovation sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, resource technologies, space and defence, digital technologies, agtech, and health and life sciences. Candidates must demonstrate international-level achievements or significant potential in these areas and show how they can contribute meaningfully to South Australia’s economic or innovation landscape.

Expert advice: prepare early to seize the opportunity

This new pathway highlights South Australia’s commitment to attracting highly skilled global talent. It also offers an additional opportunity for applicants who were previously uninvited or still refining their profiles. Those with PhD qualifications, research achievements, entrepreneurial experience, or high-level professional expertise are encouraged to prepare early and seek professional advice to assess eligibility and strengthen their application.
