Tasmania State Nomination Cap Almost Full – ROI Submission to Be Suspended from June

On 15 May 2025, Migration Tasmania issued an announcement stating that due to nomination demand exceeding the remaining allocation, restrictions will be implemented for the Skilled Migration State Nomination Program (subclass 190 and 491). All Registrations of Interest (ROIs) will be closed in stages and fully suspended from 16 June 2025 until the start of the new financial year.

1. Staged Closure Arrangements

Stage 1: From 5:00pm, Monday 19 May 2025

Only applicants holding a “Gold Pass” will be allowed to submit an ROI. The Gold Pass applies to candidates who have completed a skills assessment and are working in a critical occupation.

Stage 2: From 5:00pm, Monday 16 June 2025

No further ROI submissions will be accepted, even from Gold Pass holders. This policy will remain in effect until nomination allocations for the 2025–26 financial year are released.

2. Processing of Existing Applications

Migration Tasmania will continue processing all nomination applications that have already been submitted but are yet to be finalised. However, due to the extremely limited number of available places, not all eligible applicants will receive a nomination this financial year.

Once the allocation is exhausted, any applications that are approved but not yet nominated will be deferred until the 2025–26 program year.

As for submitted ROIs that have not yet received an invitation to apply, they will be retained in the system and considered with priority once the new program year opens.

3. Policy Background and Purpose

As Tasmania becomes an increasingly popular destination for skilled migrants, the number of state nomination applications has surged. In order to prioritise talent for key local industries, Migration Tasmania has chosen to limit ROI access early and reserve it for applicants with the most critical skillsets.

This also reflects the current tightening of migration policies across Australian states, with growing emphasis on applicants’ genuine employability and intent to settle in regional areas.

4. Recommendations and Strategic Response

  • Applicants already eligible for a Gold Pass should ensure they submit their ROI before 16 June 2025;
  • Those not yet eligible are advised to begin planning for the 2025–26 program year, including arranging Tasmanian employment, obtaining a skills assessment, and preparing residency evidence;
  • Applicants who have submitted an ROI but not yet been invited should continue to keep their documentation up-to-date and complete, so they are ready to respond when the new program year opens.
